How to play the Old Course
It is most likely that every golfer who comes to St Andrews in August for the World Deaf Golf Championships will want to enjoy the once in a lifetime experience of playing the Old Course and follow in the footsteps of the world's greatest golfers who will have played there for the 150th Open Championship just a few days earlier. The Old Course is a public course and it is actually easier to obtain a tee time than many might think.

    Golfers are good mannered gentlemen
In 1981, a deaf golfer Robert Murray was about to drive off on the 16th tee at Balcomie Links, Crail when a car approached on a road cutting through the fairway, the car stopped in a gentlemanly fashion to allow the golfer to play through. Robert noticed the car and thought better let the car through first and waved him to go on but the car driver touched his cap and waved back to the golfer to play on. Robert waved back ok and drove his tee shot which flew over and hit a old water hydrant (a feature of the course) which bounced back and shattered the car's windscreen.

Moral:- get the hell outta the way.

    The PGA European Senior Tour
The PGA European Senior Tour continued over the 21st - 23rd August at the Torrance Course, Fairmont St. Andrews as it played host to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scottish Senior Open. Designer and former Ryder Cup Captain Sam Torrance was hot favourite after his success in Barbados but was tied for 39th after struggling in the first round with a back injury.

It was Englishman Glenn Ralph who clinched his maiden European Senior Tour victory, carding a final 71. He finished one stroke clear of compatriot Bob Cameron and Argentine Luis Carbonetti to cap a remarkable comeback from injury. The €39,353 first prize at Fairmont St Andrews is the biggest cheque of his career.

Australian Peter Senior finished a credible fourth on his Senior Tour debut - three shots of the pace - while Gordon Brand Jnr was the leading Scot on three under par after a final round 73. Ian Woosnam closed the gap on Mark McNulty at the top of the Order of Merit after closing with a 74 to finish in a share of 14th place.
